BOOK SYNOPSIS
Joe Jordan, the world-class Scottish footballer who played for Leeds United, Manchester United , AC Milan and Verona, tells the story of his intense and inspirational career.
Joe Jordan was one of many gifted and ambitious Scots, who made the journey south to England and, ultimately, glory and success. He was part of the great tradition of Alex James, Denis Law and Graeme Souness who laid siege to the English game. He played fifty-two times for his country and became the first Scot to score in three World Cups. When he moved from Leeds to Manchester United in 1978, his transfer fee of £350,000 broke the record for a deal between British clubs. He recaptures the ethos of this fascinating era, and tells how he had to endure the tough rites of passage involved in playing for the most successful and demanding teams in the world.
In Behind The Dream, Joe Jordan recounts for the first time the story if his brilliant playing days in England and Italy, as well as his managerial and coaching career at Bristol City, Hearts, Celtic and Huddersfield Town. A thoughtful loner who saw his football career as both a crusade and a test of character and determination, he candidly discusses experiences that have included the sweetness of success and the pain of failure.
As well as reliving his personal journey as a brave and passionate footballer, Joe Jordan looks back on his childhood days spent growing up in a Lanarkshire pit village, and the culture of Scottish football that has been all but lost in recent years. This change is a haunting theme in Jordan's autobiography; he laments the loss, while vividly recalled some of his earliest memories, such as making a pilgrimage with his steelworker father to Celtic's Parkhead Stadium. Here, he worshiped European Cup-winning stars Bertie Auld, Jimmy Johnstone and Bobby Lennox, who inspired him to realise his dream. He regrets that the excitement of those days may have disappeared forever, and discusses at length the many differences between Scottish football then and now.
Joe Jordan will always feel privileged to have spent his life in what he considered to be his natural terrain, and his story is a powerful and poignant testament to his love of the game.
