BOOK SYNOPSIS
'Beryl Burton OBE was a cycling phenomenon...'
So begins the inscription on her mural in Morley town centre, reflecting a unique dominance in the passion that consumed her. She broke the women's and men's records for the 12-hour endurance race - an achievement unequalled in sport to this day.
Her superiority was matched by her longevity; she finished the UK's 'Best All-Rounder' for twenty-five consecutive years.
She was hampered by the institutional sexism of the cycling authorities, but carried on winning, while also working full time on a Yorkshire rhubarb farm and running a household.
Along with little more than their bikes, a small tent and a camping stove, the Burton family went out and conquered the world.
With access to previously unseen correspondence and photographs, and through extensive interviews with family, friends, rivals and fellow sporting giants, journalist Jeremy Wilson peels back the layers to reveal one of the most compelling characters in cycling history.
Long overlooked, Beryl Burton deserves finally to be recognised among the all-time greats of any sport.
