BOOK SYNOPSIS

Billy Beane, the Oakland A's general manager, is leading a revolution. Reinventing his team on a budget, he needs to outsmart the richer teams. He signs undervalued players whom scouts consider flawed but who have a knack for getting on base, scoring runs, and winning games. Moneyball is a quest for the secret of success in baseball and a tale of the search for new baseball knowledge - insights that will give the little guy who is willing to discard old wisdom the edge over big money.

OUR REVIEW

I think if you've read this book, you're likely to have watched the film adaptation starring Brad Pitt and Seth Rogan. Some will have just watched the film and personally, I watched the film and then read the book, brilliantly told by Michael Lewis on the Oakland Athletic side of 2002 who switched it up, building a side based solely on data, rather than the regular system that had never before been challenged.

Whilst in today's sporting landscape, data has never been more prevelent, back then it was non-existent and alien to fans, pundits and those within the game. This book is the outline of what is likely to have been the 1st real attempt at using analytical data in the sport of Baseball, a game that today is very data-driven and has led the way for other sports to sit up and take notice.

The intricate details on how the data was researched and used is interesting and the relative success of the experiment is likely why both the book was an initial success but also why the film adaptation was also a hit, attracting two of the biggest names in film.

Being able to dig down into the golden nuggets of information that can identify something that back then was led by a scouting system that was all about eyes on the game, rather on the information that allowed a dysfunctional team of misfits to nearly go all the way, was a fantastic look into the future of sport in today's data driven world.

I can recommend both the book and the film to read/watch, you won't be disappointed if you are a sports fan and interested in the start of the data driven world we now live in.
