BOOK SYNOPSIS

Throughout the eras, various players have been acclaimed the 'Greatest Golfer in the World': Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.

For one moment in time, during the 1980s there could be no challenging Sandy Lyle's right to that accolade. Having won the Open Championship at Royal St George's in 1985 and the Tournament Players Championship (the so-called fifth major) two years later, in 1988 Lyle became the first Briton to triumph in the Masters. He clinched victory with a 7-iron from a fairway bunker on the eighteenth - one of the most memorable sporting moments of the twentieth century.

But by 1989 Sandy's reign was over. His form became so erratic that, even though he played a pivotal role in Europe's historic 1985 and 1987 Ryder Cup victories, he would not feature in the contest again until being invited to serve as one of 2006 captains Ian Woosnam's assistants at the K Club in Co. Kildare.

Universally regarded by his peers as 'Golf's Mr Nice Guy' Lyle's story is one of classic sporting moments, golfing genius and gritty determination to battle back to the top, as demonstrated by his fine showing in the 2005 Open all told with his natural charm and wit.
